1953 Sunbeam S-7 Deluxe
Sunbeam was founded in Wolverhampton by John Marston in 1912, initially to make bicycles, but soon becoming a major player in motorcycle manufacturing. By the 1920s, Sunbeam were regular TT race winners, with outright victories on the Island in 1920, 1922, 1928 and 1929. However, following the sale of the marque by AJS and Matchless owners AMC to BSA in 1943, the postwar Sunbeams were all shaft-driven, in-line twins of 487cc capacity designed by Erling Poppe.
The unusual S models were manufactured from 1946 to 1956. There were three: the S7, S8 and S7 Deluxe. The engine layout was the unusual feature. The engine was an inline 500 cc twin which drove a shaft drive to the rear wheel. The inline engine made this technologically feasible—horizontally-opposed ("flat") twin engines on BMW motorcycles had already used shaft drives.
The original S7 was produced from 1946 to 1948 and did not sell well. In 1949, the sportier S8, with standard-sized wheels rather than the fat tyres of the S7, and BSA type front forks, was produced. The S7 design was improved and then sold as the S7 Deluxe. The original S7 was available only in black, whereas the standard colours for the S8 were "Polychromatic Grey" or black. The S7 Deluxe came in either "Mist Green" or black.
You can't deny the originality of the concept. A semi-enclosed, two-seat, three-wheel motorcycle that sprints to 60 in 5.7 seconds, returns an estimated 46 mpg and qualifies for HOV lane use even without a passenger. I don't know if there's really a market for it at $17K but at least it's a sign that VW management might be planning to innovate its way out of the current sales slump rather than resorting to GM-style fire sales.
